Ely, Minnesota

Sep 1978

Had to come back to Ely this morning to buy more food… A bear raided our campsite last night, broke open our cooler and ate half the food. :-(. Gave us a bit of a fright – sniffing around the tent but he really wasn’t interested in us. Pulling out soon.

We are canoeing on Lake Swiftcurrent today which is only a .2 mile portage away from Lake Josephine. Others were on horses seeing another lake. The weather is not great – mucho rain and there is still lots of snow in the park in some of the campsites! But the scenery is beautiful – Real mountains. So far have seen 3 or 4 deer, chipmunks, rabbits, jays and 1 bear (from a distance!).

Magnificent Mt. Gould and the Garden Wall are the backdrop for Lake Josephine. Less than one mile hike, or a short boat ride, take the visitor to the beautiful lake, one of 250 in Glacier National Park. The unique flower, Beargrass, is a member of the Lily family, and can be found in nearly all areas of the park.
