International Falls

Hi – It was 22 degrees at the lake this AM!! But the sun is still warm and the day clear and bright, so we had a beautiful drive here. The leaves are just lovely right now. It’s to be warmer now for a few days.
We “did” International Falls this aft. – but declined the H.S. football game. Are now watching baseball.
So nice to visit with you. Too bad we can’t exchange a few degrees of temp. I’m convinced there are more than 10,000 lakes in Minnesota.

Grand Marais, Minnesota

The Grand Marais Lighthouse, built in 1922, marks the entry point to the city’s harbor. Grand Marais is located on Minnesota’s breathtaking North Shore (of Lake Superior), approximately 40 miles from the Canadian border. The town is the entry point to the Gunflint Trail which winds 83 miles through the B.W.C.A. and Superior National Forest.

Dropped Val and her friend off at camp yesterday. Sarah was nervous but expect she will be ok. Val will have to create a separate identity from her sister (who has been there 5 summers!). Had a good visit with Nicholas – and thanks for all the presents! We are enjoying them (Val wore the Vodka T-shirt to camp). Went on a long hike today and Astra is zonked – ready for bed before supper – expect she will recover by tomorrow!

We came here yesterday to see the sights and join the crowd on the harbor boat tour. It is an interesting city. We have done the waterfront, dinner at Fitgers and tonight we plan to be in Bayfield, Wi. It’s been hot in Branerd but nice here.

We drove through this tunnel on the North Shore twice and didn’t get scared but Karolyn was afraid to go down the Alpine Slide at Lutsen!

Silver Creek Cliff Tunnel, Lake Superior’s North Shore. Silver Creek Cliff Tunnel is located three miles north of Two Harbors, Minnesota. The 1340 foot-long mined tunnel is the second of its kind located on Minn. Hwy. 61. Approximately 500,000 cubic yards of rock were excavated and removed from the project allowing for finished tunnel dimension of 48 feet wide by 32 feet high.
