Dear

After four years here I plan to go back to University of Alexandria. Shortly we go to Kenya on our way home for annual leave. Happy new year.

NIGERIA

The most populous single African nation on the continent of Africa, lies on the west coast and has a rich tradition and culture closely connected with her religious beliefs and the rites and practices relating to them. Traditional religion has given the people a heritage of culture and tradition which is still noticeable despite later influence by Isalm and Christianity. The agriculture, music, art, craft, language and economies of the country still bear traces of this influence.

Greetings from NDjamena (which used to be called Fort Lamy). Arrived here yesterday via Douala, Cameroon. It is hot — 95 degrees or more when we landed. We will be here until Saturday when we fly to Paris for a connection to Abidjan. A long way around but much shorter in time. Hope all is well and will see you soon.

Hi

Had a tour yesterday of Roman ruins, mosques, shopping (got a rug!!) and I waded in the sea here and we had cold drinks in the “casbah” in the old fort behind! Hot but breezy – lots of old friends here. Many have asked about you.

My dears,

Abidjan is as glitzy as ever, and after 5 days of rain and mud up to here in Bamako, it’s ok for a little R & R! This has been a hard working but heavily nostalgic trip. I’ve been wined and dined by old friends in Dakar, Bamako and here. What happy memories it brings back!

Treetops, Nyeri, Kenya

June, 1968

Had a nice time at Treetops – saw lots of wild game. It is beautiful here (Mt Kenya)- and chilly. Have a fireplace in my room which I use. Meetings going well but saddened by death of R. Kennedy. (McGeorge) Bundy leaving tonight for funeral.

Here I am hiking in to Treetops in December, 1974. Lots of crazy baboons on the roof.

On another note, this week I am being featured on Cinda’s A Place in the World Blog. Check it out !!
