Holland in Bloom

December 1981

Dear Fernie,

Bill and I are getting ready to go for a walk – it is cloudy and old. We went to a lovely snow-covered park about 2 hours east of here yesterday – it was really beautiful – also had a nice museum. We got stuck in parking lot – but otherwise was lovely day.

Happy New Year!

Lago Maggiore, 1976

This is where Pa has finally returned to! This is all we see from the windows of the house – quite unbelievable! The water is a little cold for me but the weather is good. Warmest greetings to you.

This is a Polish postcard – I can’t believe I’m finally somewhere you haven’t been! Excitement plus. Well, we have been thru London, Dover, Calais, Brussels, Bonn, Linz, Vienna, Czech, Carowia, Warsaw and here. I’m exhausted. Of course we broke the drought and the heatwave – it has been cold or cool and we have been rained on several times. I can’t stand not being able to understand anyone, but otherwise I love it. Why did I never come before?

Just got off a carton of cookies (12 boxes) to your niece but forgot to enclose a note saying they are from you. Hope you can correct the error. How is your recovery coming along? Are you able to navigate at all? Keep DC under control until we see you.

I hope you are enjoying our vacation!

We took Enrique to school a few days ago. My heart kind of shrunk a bit. On Monday we leave for Italy after leaving Flavia and Lupe at their new school.

My regards to all the family “saludos carinosos” for you,

Alicia and I are enjoying very much this beautiful beach. It has been a great rest! It was wonderful to see you after such a long time and to feel that time has not changed the relationship at all. Thank you so much again for all your kindnesses and very lovely Delft plate. I hope that not so many years will pass by before seeing you next time. Happy return to the US with best wishes and warm saludos.

Arrived OK – 2 hrs late but went straight to my room, a shower, and a nap. Slept about 2 hours on the flight plus 2 hours here so I am in good shape. Just had lunch – watercress soup and a sandwich and a walk. Will leave the hotel about 5:30 for the bus to Heathrow. Service on Northwest was very good.

See you, Love, Bill

We are spending 3 nites in this lovely old wine (Burgundy) town. It is fascinating. We had lunch with friends of Alex’s and then were taken thru all phases of winemaking from vines to tasting in his caves. The weather is also perfect. Wish you were here, too.
