Dear V & B

Greetings from sunny Queensland, where the wet season is just beginning, with a cyclone in north Q’ld. I am back working in the Dept Microbiology after the Christmas/New Year break, starting to write my thesis and related papers. Many thanks for the IITA card. I hope all is going well there. Bob is due here tomorrow. Best wishes for 1979.

Yours sincerely, Gabrielle

Built on land given by Dr. Mayne and his sister, the University building was opened in 1948.

It strikes me as weird (typical?) that they name Dr. Mayne but his sister is not named. Dr. James Mayne worked at the Brisbane Hospital from 1891 until 1904. His sister’s name was Mary Emilia. She never married.

Dear K,N,N

Happy New Year!! I hope you had a good trip back to DC. It was great to see all of you in Madison. It had been quite a long time! How was the rest of your stay? Thank you very much for the Christmas presents. Kelly and I are planning a shopping spree for Thursday so the money will come in very nicely. It’s new shoe time. Maybe something else too will have to see. A new cd could be quite nice also. Some exciting news for me today… I got a new internship today!! This one is at WCCO/CBS Channel 4, in the Special Projects department. It starts next Tuesday. I am very excited. It will really balance out the PBS internship of last semester. There is so much to learn. I might even get to help with some undercover reporting!! Once again news junkie I must be. I’ll keep you posted!

Dear K and N

The Copper Canyon really is pretty spectacular. Had a great train trip through the Sierra Madres today and are now relaxing on the edge of the Canyon. Will spend a couple nights here before pressing on.

Dear

Thanks much for the Xmas gifts. It used to be that when I was feeling low about the performance of my car I would have to walk all the way to Shorewood Hills (rich ‘burb) to lighten my spirits. Now, all I need to do is brew up a cup a tea, take a seat in my favorite chair and open up my new Mercedes-Benz book when I want to see what a car that works really looks like.

Thanks again, Tom

Dear Bill and Ginia

Thank you for the Anaken toy. I like it. We forgot to mow the lawn on the weekend.

Dear N

I went to the Chicago Museum of contemporary art but didn’t see this fellow — still thought you might like him. I will need your new address for future mailings! K is off being tested to see what she should do now that she is grown up.

Hi

I arrived this am (1 day late) — family met me in Napier, we had a lunch – picnic in a park on the harbor and drove to Waipukurau (I can spell it but not pronounce it!) – Tuesday: We are going to the beach today – Marg. has not had her baby yet – we’ll go to her farm today also. The climate is lovely, country beautiful – think I’ll move down to retire here!

Dear

Arrived here ok and it is hotter than I expected – 95 degrees yesterday when we landed but dry heat.

The persons to whom Susan had written are anxious to see us and we already have lots of meetings line up. However offices are only open from 7 – 1 pm. so we will have free time for resting in pm.

Greetings from Maui

It was good to hear from you and we so appreciate the valet service! Of course the sun is shining and we walk the beach everyday, swim, sightsee, eat and read. A high point was finding Lindberg’s grave yesterday. We miss you – and are holding good thoughts for March 11.
