Loons

August 1994, Duluth, MN

It is incredibly beautiful up here and we haven’t even left camp. We did swing on a rope, and swamp a canoe for fun, but that was after we learned those great strokes to guide the canoe. My group is interesting, and should be pretty fun. We are going to the lake with black sands and the worst portages in the Quetico. Our trip sounds really exciting and we are leaving at 5:30 tomorrow morning. No one else in my group really likes mornings, though.

Hi- Mostly beautiful weather – lots of art (you’d like it) – tea was beautiful and delicious with a lecture on tea beforehand, all in the beautiful Empress Hotel, a walk through a lovely garden. Nice group w/ good hotel. Now Bill has a cold.

Common Loon

June 1995

We are on the road up into Canada, very bumpy but beautiful at the same time. Our trip is going to be strange because we have to go around all the forest fires up here. They almost closed the parks we are going to so we are keeping our fingers crossed. I should have lots of nice smokey pictures to share when I get back! Even if we do run into fires, I do know we’ll have a great trip.

The Common Loon has a hauntingly beautiful voice and an equally striking plumage. A collar of white stripes and intricate patterns of white and black feathers of the wings and back distinguished the Loon from other species of waterbirds, mainly ducks and grebes, for which it is often mistaken.
