This place had a most interesting museum of old fishing boats and regalia of the time. We had a nice time in Luxembourg over the weekend. It’s a beautiful little country and city – full of castles, forts and mts. We were impressed with the war cemetery (U.S.) there also. It is beautifully done. Alicia went with us – she and Bill bought beautiful anarkin-type (?) coats on sale!
So nice to have jean here – I’ll probably arrive Minn. Aug. 21. Love, Va.
The family arrived at 4 pm yesterday but were in good spirits and all looked so nice. The girls seemed to feel at home right away – unpacked and organized their things! We ate supper, walked around the block, and they all fell into bed – are still asleep (11 am). Wish you were here ,too.
We’ve just had a delicious panekoke brunch. So good! Yesterday we took a picnic brunch and traveled up to Enkhuisen – ate on the shore of IJsselmeer, a beautiful spot. Then went on into the town and visited very interesting museum – the Zuiderzee Museum — many old boats and thing having to do with the sea. It was a lovely rip. Alicia went with us. Friday night we heard a lovely organ concert in a big church here. We’ve had beautiful weather.
It sure was good to visit with you yesterday. Glad I didn’t get you out of the shower this time. We are still having snow and quite cold weather, but we are driving to Amsterdam this evening to a concert with Isaac Stern as guest soloist. We’ll ge
t up early, have a bite of supper, then to the concert and right back home. We have season tickets for these concerts. Must get over to the post box.
Wrong queen in this picture – but you will know the hall. Bill and I walked to Kourhuis this AM – my word – the place is fantastic. The blue mermaid sitting among the lobby visitors!! The beach was jammed with people (and dogs!) because it was our first warm sunny day for ages. Too crowded for me, but the park behind us and the streets were lovely. My feet seem to have revived – I walk to Stevinstraat and back easily now. More later in the week.
I stayed longer in Europe than I had planned but got some work done and loved every minute of it.
So take care – I’m off to Lagos tomorrow.
Love, Bill
Schiphol Airport Hilton, 2 minute free shuttle-bus ride from main terminal, 204 air-conditioned and sound-proofed rooms, indoor swimming pool and sauna, 2 restaurants, bar, meeting facilities, and parking.
Surely you remember the biggest wine barrel in the world! Anyway, it is in the cellar of the Heidelberg castle and we climbed on top of it today, along with about a million other tourists. The town of H. is full of people, as well as rain – luckily it usually only rains hard when we are inside restaurants, Italian ice cream shops, and stores. Tomorrow we catch the train back to Holland – hope Va. is rested and ready for us again!
I”m in Scotland for the weekend with a friend I met in London. I’ve been having a good time so far on my trip and I’ve learned a lot. Scotland is beautiful. It’s nice to get out of the big city. I hope your summer is going well and hasn’t been too warm.
We just talked on the phone – I am appalled that you all came – but know Jean was delighted to have you. May 30- Cold again this AM. I braved the wind (in my winter coat) and walked to Scheveningen to browse the shopping mall. I found this card which I find interesting. Also, we walked on Sat. thru the thick forests around Arnheim and the leaf patterns were so glorious – it was beautiful. And no none was there of course, we got terribly lost and had to walk more than we really wanted – but had a good dinner afterward!
