We actually haven’t been to these falls for quite a while (if ever) but may go tomorrow. Today we hiked north of Grand Marais and then sat on the rocks in the sun and listened and watched the big lake. Pretty relaxing! Dropped Val and Sarah off yesterday at Widgi — Sarah was still nervous but they were talking to their fellow groupie as we left (they didn’t get the Russians after all). One of the camp leaders said they were going into Quetico. Anyway, how are things at the lake?

St Paul Winter Carnival Ice Palace. The 1986 Ice Place was the home of King Boreas Rex L during the Winter Carnival. The structure was 128 ft. 9 in. high making it officially the tallest built to date. It took 36 days to build out of 9,000 single and 14,000 double ice blocks that weighted as much as 700 lbs. each. According to legend the Vulcans destroy the palace when the carnival is over and Spring approaches.

This is the St Croix River. It’s ice fishing time!

A familiar winter sight in the northland are dog teams powering sleds across sparkling fields of snow. Once a necessary means of winter transportation, dog sledding has evolved into an exciting winter sport with races for both amateurs and professionals.

Naniboujou is a very colorful place full of readers and puzzle solvers. No internet and only a bit of cell reception down by the lake, so it’s not for everyone. But it is lovely, peaceful and very quiet!

The Great Hall at Naniboujou Lodge and Restaurant is decorated in designs of the Cree Indians, bright and colorful as when it was first painted by desingeer Antoine Goufee in the late 1920’s.

This channel connects the upper and lower lakes of Minnetonka. Lake Minnetonka located about 15 miles west of Minneapolis has over 300 miles of shore-line. It is noted for its scenic beauty, fishing, sailing and a summer playground. A large amusement part is on the water’s edge at Excelsior, Minnesota.
Apparently the amusement park was there from 1925 to 1973. I never saw it.
